After just a week of price increase, oil companies yet again increased gas prices by Php 1.50. People have asked “can it get any worse?” Actually, it can, and my sources said it will. Big ouch to hear that. But an even worse thing to hear is that it might even reach PhP 60.00 per liter. The dollar exchange rate increased but due to the Central Bank’s intervention, the rate didn’t close to the expected PhP 44 level. I’m sure some of the OFW families have been wanting for the dollar rates to go up, as their beloved relatives earn in dollars. I’m one of them actually, but I cannot help but be guilty of this seemingly selfish thinking, because I know with the weakening peso plus the rising oil prices, cost of commodities, services, and goods would likewise increase. It really makes people think of really migrating elsewhere. I was once invited by my relatives in California to migrate and be with them, but was a bit hesitant back then, because I wasn’t sure if there were Los Angeles jobs that would suit me.

Oh well, maybe in these times, instead of looking at the negative aspects in life, I should just continue thanking that our families are blessed. Gives me a sense of relief you know, to just continuously accept the blessings we receive on a daily basis, and never to forget to thank the Lord for each day that's given to us.

Three Girls

I had lunch today with two of my girl friends (my best buddies actually) along with their significant others (huhuhu, I was the odd one hahaha), and boy did I miss going out with these two ladies! After our steak fest, we decided to watch the movie "Sex and the City." Too bad the boys couldn't do anything but to please their ladies and tag along with us. The movie was a good one, I must say. So many things that I can relate to. More on that later when I gathered my thoughts and make a separate entry on it. Anyway, the 4 ladies really had solid friendship and I just know that ours is the same as that of Carrie and her gang. What I envied about them though is their time to go out of the country and have much-needed vacation. Prior to us watching the movie, I popped the question "when would we have time to go out of the country for a vacation?" but I knew the answer before it came. Of course, not in the near future. Friend I is pregnant so maybe my dream of going to the Caribbean and stay in those lovely Caribbean villa rentals with the girls probably won't happen in the near future. Oh well, I would really look forward to that day. Us girls having the time of our lives. No boys allowed. Hahaha.

It is 3:44 am and I'm so wide awake. Why? My little angel woke up at around 3:04 am asking for milk. After giving her, I couldn't sleep anymore because just like a gushing fan (yes I am one!) I couldn't help myself from staring at my little one and holding her real tight. She is soooo lovely.

GRRR! I'm so frustrated with myself right now. And I thought I was doing really well for a week, then suddenly I got tempted... and gave in.

*SIGH*

I guess I just have to try harder, for my sanity's sake.

Disclaimer: This isn't anything bad ok! Just my own resolution! Hehehe.

Untidy Utility Area

As I went inside our utility area to get the shoes I'd be wearing today, I noticed that the room is very untidy. Sure, I had shelves installed in order to maximize the small space. Yet even if there were already shelves, the items (either the ones we haven't used yet or the ones we hardly use, such as the Christmas trees) are just "displayed" out there in disarray. I just wish that we bought some moving boxes when we were in the process of moving from our rented place to our new condo. I'm sure we could've used these boxes not only when moving but also for storing these items. Maybe it's not too late though to get me some. I'm sure when Enrique comes home he'd check each and every corner and nook of the condo to see if I have maintained our home well while he's away.

Little Miss V went to market. Little Miss V bought some veggies and herbs. She stopped by a shop she read from a blog... And ended up getting her own Goyard bag!

Crazy but true!

I guess my plan to give Enrique an IWC watch as a surprise gift would have to wait a little longer. Anyway, he'd prefer that I buy a bag I would be happy about rather than buy him a watch that he claimed he would hardly use ("I don't need a designer watch when working onboard").

... when I REALLY want my husband.

Nyahahahahahaha....

>;-)

I can just imagine me wearing some cheap lingerie as feast for his eyes (and his eyes only hahaha). Sorry if this entry sounds so Rated-R, but I can't help it. I really miss my husband (and surely he misses me), everything about him. Whenever I see couples or glimpse on romantic scenes on TV, I cannot help but wish that my husband is nearby so we can canoodle like crazy. It is true though that absence makes the heart grow fonder. Whenever it's time for him to go home, I get so nervous and all and daydream like a love-struck teenager. His coming home is always worth the wait though. Makes us make the most of the time we spent together...

Manic Thursday

Work has been hectic this week, it’s crazy! First there were a couple of requests from seafarers onboard, if they could come home early due to this and that. Then the usual concern of rebookings of flights of onsigners because the vessels’ schedules changed. Lastly, we have a lot of crew who will leave for their respective vessels, so I have to talk to them and brief them before they join. Can someone take me to the really nice vacation place so I can relax and unwind? Whew. Really, I can't wait till the weekend. Good thing there's blogging, my immediate form of unwinding. Haha.

Check out my little angel, eating and smiling (and loving life I guess!) in our beloved balcony...

Speaking of our balcony, here's our latest picture together in our favorite spot. We kinda look like we're in some cold place noh? The wind was sooo breezy that time, this picture was actually the second shot because my hair was everywhere in the first shot. Hahaha.

I totally loved her outfit here. Hahaha.

Cozy Moments

Let me just say that I am so very happy that we decided to get our own pad in Sycamore Tower (where we live now). Even if the unit we got was somewhat small compared to the other two bedroom unit with a bigger area, I'm still thankful that we got this particular unit. All 2 bedroom units have their own balcony, but the one we got not only faces the morning sun but also it gives us a really nice view especially at night. Not surprisingly, our balcony is probably the one place where I love relaxing and communing with nature (thanks to my herbs and other plants hahaha). Even during summer, there is a gentle breeze that refreshes us amid the tremendous heat and humidity. Nowadays, its chilly outside. I totally love it.

Our little garden/patio is still a little bare, and we probably need to get more patio furniture to complete its look, but so far the 2 batibot chairs are quite sufficient. I really want to design this small space of ours, where our little family can just relax and have fun.

Rediscovering Us

categories: , ,
I can be such a Drama Queen. A few days ago I have written in my other blog about Enrique and that he must've been from Mars because of his poor pick-up of me wanting to hear some lovey-dovey stuff from him. I should've let this pass but of course, being the DQ that I am, I had to follow-up by text-barraging him. I later realized what was really nagging me, and so I finally made a decision to let go of some of the misunderstandings we had and never to grave-dig again. He must have been very happy with my email to him about this, and since yesterday he has called me thrice and was very very sweet, and (YES!!!) lovey-dovey. I was half scared that he would remind me again about the car and that I should have the air conditioning compressor checked because last year the car gave me a scare when it kept on losing "power" (sorry I don't know how to describe it but the electricity seemed to fluctuate and engine acted as if it would die but didn't). But nope, he was just all mushy. Maybe my texts made him realize what I have been telling him all along. And maybe my last email made such an impact to him.

I'm not complaining though. In fact, I'm very very contented and pleased with these developments. You know, going back to our "old us."

To Pill or Not?

categories:
My officemate and I talked about weight loss (blame it on our culture's fixation on weight) and she has asked me if she knew of anyone who took diet pills that actually worked. I told her that I don't know of any, but also told her that if she's interested in taking them (she's in the big side, you know), she should consult with her doctor first, especially since she has asthma. I mean, maybe there would be some limitations, and boy if asthma is involved I surely would want her to know about it first. I have talked to her why suddenly she thought of taking these pills when there are other seemingly safer alternatives to it? There's our little gym in our office which she can use. Her food intake is also something she should carefully look into. I read in a book that the first thing that one should do when coming up with a plan on how to lose weight is to make a list of what goes in her body and determine which of these can be considered "sinful." She told me she has tried to exercise regularly, monitor her food intake, and control her "sinful" indulgences, but to no avail. That's why she has considered taking the pills. I hope that she would seriously think about this first, and like what I said, consult the doctor before taking anything.

Now that I think about it, my previous "rants" about me trying to lose what I consider excess pounds, actually pales in comparison to others.

BEH!

She also keeps on drooling more. Is she teething? Of, I DO hope so, because I'm beginning to be impatient waiting for her first pearly whites to show...

Golfing Around

categories:
I have mentioned earlier in my Random 10 Tag that one thing about me is that I am quite good in sports. However, I realized that there is one "sport" which I tried to learn but somehow didn't get to like it. Golf. I apologize to all golf lovers out there but during that time I thought it was kinda boring. *Peace* I'd rather play though with my golf software (which golfers might in turn call boring hahaha!). My Dad was the one who introduced me to this sport, probably because he needed somebody to join him whenever he had a sudden urge to play. I really tried but I knew I'd fail the moment the ball hit our "attendant" (I don't know what they call them haha). Dad however was very proud because he was awarded a trophy when he had a "Hole in One." His interest in golf however waned a bit. Lack of time perhaps?

Anyway, I have been previously thinking about what perfect gift would be given to my Dad this Father's Day, and since my Boss has recently talked to me about golf, I thought that it would be also nice if my Dad would receive a new set of golf shoes to revive his interest in playing what used to be his favorite sport, aside from tennis. Hmm, I should tell this to my Mom too, and maybe we could do some coordination as to what would be our treat to Dad.

And the quest for Father's Day gift will continue...

Booze-Free Me

Blame it on the tag Random 10 I've been thinking about those good ol' days when partying and booze was my thing. I'm serious when I say that I was a heavy heavy heavy drinker back then. And to get things rolling, whenever we have parties, I get to be the Bar Temptress and mix drinks for my friends. I especially liked mixing for dear friend I, who totally moves all the drinks I offered her. Imagine, I can down 8 shots of tequila, straight up, then just drink a sip or two of beer to break the monotony, then on with around 6 shots of pure vodka. Wasn't drunk at all after that. Just very very very tipsy. My Norwegian colleagues were very impressed when we had a drinking session one time in Malaysia, and they couldn't believe after all the booze, I was the last (Wo)man standing.

Then one day I stopped. Nope, not because I went to alcohol rehab, but because I just decided that I'm over with the booze, the scent of it, the taste. Now, even half a glass of good red wine gives me a buzzing feeling. Oh well, sometimes a girl has to move on to other more important things in life. I miss that life sometimes, but hey, I'm happy with the life I have right now.

Happy living, happy loving, happy laughing.

Yet another tag from Takki Jen. Here's a list of things I need to do...

1. EXERCISE. Ok fine, I don't need to lose weight, as some people have pointed out. But I think I need to tone my body a bit. I'm thinking of finally enrolling in Yoga Classes. Does anyone want to join me?
2. Check again the papers that have been littering around our house. Throw the unnecessary ones.
3. Have a pedicure or at least remove the nail color. They're chipped already!
4. Finalize our 50th birthday present to my Mom. That's sooo overdue, thanks to my sibs.
5. Comfort my sister who just broke up with her bf.
6. Finally have dinner at home with my friends. Yoohoo... Concon, Jen, Maricel, etc... can we please get on with our plans???
7. Revive my calendar of meals so that I don't waste the perishables that I keep on buying but end up not using....
8. Start planning for Eanna's first birthday party!
9. Spring cleaning. Give away clothes and shoes I no longer use.
10. Bring the car to a car spa and have it professionally cleaned. Hahaha.

Let me know what you need to do Concon, Vannie, Melissa, Karla, Che!

Father's Day Gift

First comes Mother's Day. Next comes Father's Day. How about Children's Day? Hahaha. Anyway, in a few week's time, Father's Day will be celebrated, and as early as now I'm already thinking of what to give to two special fathers: my Dad and Enrique. Both have seemingly different tastes and interests, and I really want to give them something that I know they would use.

For Enrique, he's more a the tools kind of guy. back in 2006, he hinted that he wanted a toolbox, so that's what i gave him for Christmas. This proved to be a very wise buy, because we have extensively used this during our home renovation. I checked the toolbox again and found that some needs to be replaced, so I'm thinking of getting him DeWalt tools. I'm sure he'd be surprised and happy when he sees my gift when he comes home.

It's quite trickier though for my Dad. He seems to have almost everything. Hahaha. Anyway, last weekend I checked out their bathroom and found that his aftershave goodies are almost running out. I figured I should give him a new set of aftershave products again. Or I should consult my Mom and ask what he really needs. I'm also thinking of a collective effort from us kids, so that we can give him a really special treat.

Hmm... I have a few more weeks to finalize our Father's Day plans. Hopefully both fathers will like their treats.

Got tagged by Karla:

* Each blogger starts with ten random facts/habits about themselves.
* Bloggers that are tagged need to write on their own blog about their ten things and post these rules.
* At the end of your blog, you need to choose ten people to get tagged and list their names.
* Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.

1. I was considered to be a nerd back in High School. My friends call me "Promil Kid." Hahaha.

2. I play the Irish Whistlea

3. I'm a heavy drinker of tequila (back in those days...). I'm the "Bar Temptress" of our group of friends.

4. I'm allergic to shellfish but I kept on eating them then taking anti-allergies, until suddenly my allergies are gone. *Whew*

5. I wanted to be a nun. My parents thought it's "just a phase" but when 4th year high came and they realized I was serious, they talked to me and told me to take a regular course first then if it's really my calling, then I push thru with it.

6. I'm afraid of jet-skiing. Seriously. I prefer to be the passenger of Enrik.

7. I'm quite good in sports. Volleyball, football, table tennis, etc...

8. I'm a choir member in high school. Soprano A would you believe. Hahaha.

9. I can watch Clueless so many times without getting sick of it.

10. I love reading books about ancient mysteries such as the Pyramids and Stonehenge.

Thanks for reading my random 10. Now I’d like to see yours: Liv, Jen B, Jen S., Issh, Conci, Concon, Vannie, Che, Autumn, Jacque

The Next Bride?

categories:
I don't know, for some reason I thought of one of my best girlfriends today and I couldn't help but think that maybe she's going to be the next bride. Nyahahaha. I had a talk with her during our most recent get together and I seriously told her that I can see her (and I'm predicting) getting married either this year or next year, at the latest. Though she was "shocked" with what I just said, I could see her eyes twinkling like crazy.

Gash, she really is in love. It's as if I'm seeing myself in her. You know, the time when I was getting married. Sprakling eyes, wide wide smile, blushing cheeks. I'm soo happy for my dear friend. I don't want to preempt this but I can't wait to help her with her own wedding preps. Hahaha, too advanced thinking eh? I would even volunteer planning for her bridal shower, as form of thank you because she made my bridal shower really memorable. She's very very creative, and she even made too cute bridal shower invitations not only for me but for our other friend who also got married.

Here's mine...
Yes, I know, I know, I'm getting a little too excited. But what can I do, I miss planning for occasions like these! Hahaha. Well, maybe I should focus first on what to do for Eanna's first birthday. Hmm. Now that's another thought. :D

IT is IT?

Our office had a recent incident that caused mild flooding in our building, and though our department wasn’t greatly affected save for our floors, our land of patch panels, wires, cables, computers, i.e. our IT Department was. Funny how our smallest department can demand so much attention; when our server has some malfunctions, it seems as if our operations are paralyzed. No emails, no OCS (our system for marine personnel), no internet. Makes one think, are we now that dependent on IT, on computers, on technology? I shudder at the thought of movies whereby artificial intelligence dominates humanity: The Terminator, I, Robot, Matrix. My goodness. Hopefully life will not imitate art.

Hasta la vista, baby.

Can I Shed Some Lbs?

categories:
Last night I was seriously thinking of taking up yoga classes, as form of calming myself as well as losing some weight... Yes, you read that right! I am so determined to go back to my 100-lb level. Yes, some people think that I'm still slim and that I look better now, but there really are moments when I feel that I'm oh so flabby. My thighs are still turkey thighs, my arms are jiggly and all. And my waistline is still a 29 (or a 30, or a 28, I don't know hahaha).

Last week my body reacted to too much rich foods that I have been eating, and my body naturally discharged the excess fats. You see, I have this condition called "fat intolerance" where all excess fats in my system are naturally discharged from me. Eww right?

Anyway, like what I said, I'm really determined to tone my body and shed some pounds. Maybe I should take Orovo as diet supplements too. We'll see. In the meantime, I'd better check out the schedules of yoga classes nearby.

Yesterday, Eanna stepped foot on what would be her bag haven in the future. I mean, given the way she holds my bag every time she sees it, that's a possibility...

Thought I'd drop by to see if my dream bag can be viewed (Note: viewed only hahahaha!).

Louis Vuitton Aquarelle Frame Bag

51.85

That's the price per liter of the gasoline we use for our car (Shell V Power). My goodness, the cost just keeps getting higher everyday. Last week it was something like 50-ish. Two weeks ago it was just around 49.

*Sigh*

When oil prices go up, expect other commodities to go up as well. Time to revise our household budget I guess...

I'm tagging Che, Melissa, Con-con, Gracita, Nice, and all you out there!

Happy Mother's Day!

To all Mom's out there,

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!!

We started the day by going to Church, and thanked the Lord for another week, hopefully a week full of blessings and wonderful experiences. It's so nice that this week started with a special occasion. After hearing Mass, we went to Greenbelt 5 to check out my dream LV bag as well as what's new. The LV bag I'm salivating over is not yet here, so I added myself to the waitlist. More of this issue here. Hopefully I will be "allowed" by my husband to get another splurge item. *Cross fingers*

Then we had lunch at our MIL's house. Of course, Eanna was the life of the party. She's just too cute that even if she cried when her godmother carried her, she still looked so adorable, my SIL (the godmother) still tried (and succeeded). Before we went home I went to the store to buy my little angel her pack of nappies. Surely I wouldn't want her to run out of these (milk being the first one I don't want her to run out of!).

Now I'm here in my parent's place, waiting for them to get dressed in time for a special Mother's Day Dinner in Crowne Plaza... Food again right?

Yes, food again. Just yesterday I was so tired of eating (do you?) that by dinner time, I refused to take anything heavy, just this simple salad I "created." Since I haven't seen a recipe similar to what I did, can I name this Van's Salad?

Anyway, here it is...

Van's Salad
Serving for 1

Ingredients
A bunch of greens (I used Sunsweet Hydrophonic Baby Romaines)
2 artichoke hearts
1 cup of scallops (big one preferably, but since I didn't have this, I made do with the small ones)
3 parts good extra virgin olive oil
1 part organic Balsamic vinegar
Salt
Pepper

Sear the scallops in a very hot pan and set them aside. Don't overcook them!

In a bowl, toss in the greens. Tear the artichoke hearts into smaller pieces and add them into the bowl. Add the scallops. Drizzle the oil and blasmic vinger. Don't put too much balsamic vinegar as this will overpower the artichoke's flavor and the sweetness of the scallops. Salt and pepper to taste.

I tell you, this salad is really lovely. If you will serve this to others, just double or triple or quadruple the amount. Better yet, eyeball it and taste it to be sure. Try it!

In A Flash

In my recent (and really short) trip to Singapore, I was able to grab a few things into my shopping bag. My most useful loot however was the 8GB USB flash drive I bought in Changi Airport. Since I thought I was gonna shift gears and thus I needed to surrender my laptop, I transferred all my files to my USB.

I decided to stay though, right. But I still feel glad that I got my precious because now I don't have to bring my laptop all the time (my office space has a desktop), and when I go to the mall, I don't need to bring my camera whenever I feel like printing some of our pictures. Ain't that nice?

Company Expansion

categories:
We had a staff yesterday and our President has confirmed of our company's expansion plans. Since we will be having new vessels in the next 2 or 3 years (more than 20 perhaps!), the demand for more crew and the need for more shore-bases staff would likewise be inevitable. For one, transferring to a new building is a likely possibility, as 4 floors seemed to be not enough for our expansion. Currently we own our building, and maybe we will be buying another one with more floors or at least bigger area. Salary and benefits package are also being reviewed both for shore based and ship-based staff. Hallelujah right? Hahaha. Kidding. But hey, it's about time to review our remuneration package and see if ours is still competitive compared to other companies (ahem ahem ahem).

Organization wise, there will be also be review on our procedures, policies, bpm, and organization chart as a whole. It seems that the next few years will both be challenging and yet exciting (and rewarding I hope!) for all of us. At least however, I am quite sure that our company is a growing company, where job security is quite a certainty and career progression is definitely a possibility.

Insuring Enrique

Last night Enrique texted me and asked if I already received our health cards, as part of the benefit package given by his company. He told me he was tasked to make a report on the pros and cons of the health card, and what else he can suggest to be included in their existing benefits package. What's good about their health card is that maternity expenses are covered, even the expenses when the woman gives birth. This is not covered by my own health card, so it's nice that being a dependent of my dear husband, I will be having this benefit should I get pregnant again. A con however is that only 70% of all hospitalization expenses are covered. Nice, but it would be better if 100% will be covered. Another con is that when hospitalized, only a semi-private room is part of the package. Bummer right?

I told him to suggest though that being seafarers and thus exposed to life-threatening situations (hello, ship sinking!), it might be good that a term insurance will be given to them. That way at least other than compensation stated by their contract (and CBA), additional monetary benefits will be provided to the seafarers' families. Wouldn't that be a good thing? Not that I'm eager for this, but hey, we have to be practical right? I mean, I myself am insured, and so should Enrique.

Eanna's 8th Month Celebration

We celebrated Eanna's 8 months last night, and where there full of surprises!

First of, MIL sent us a cake, which meant that I didn't have to buy the 8 munchkins I originally planned. It was really sweet of her to remember my angel's special day. The last time, if I remember correctly, she sent us a pack of disposable diapers. :P

Then, since it was all gloomy last night, we had to forego of having dinner in out clubhouse. Question is where do we grill our barbecue right? We pushed through with our grilling... right in our balcony. Ssssh! I don't know if that's allowed but it's really an open space out there. Hope we don''t receive a letter of warning from the Admin. Hehehe. We were very discreet though and it only took us around 10 minutes. Hehehe.

In the meantime, our little angel just kept on playing while waiting for the food. Hahaha, as if she would get to taste them!

Anyway, I planned to make pasta Alfredo right? The start was a disaster, as the cream curdled when I added the lemon juice. Gash. That's the first time that this happened to me. Lately though I' noticed my cooking skills were a bit off. Oh well, no problem with it, because I immediately thought of an alternative. Pasta with Spanish sardines.

I washed and dried my pan again, heated it then added olive oil. I sauteed my chopped garlic and chili flakes, then added my sardines (plus the oil). I tossed the pasta in, then sprinkled some chopped Italian parsley. Voila. We now have pasta. Hehehe.

By the way, the barbecue tasted really good! I'll just share the recipe, courtesy of Foodie Magazine.

For dessert, other than the cake, we had vanilla ice cream topped with sliced bananas and chocolate syrup. As usual, our bellies were stuffed. But it really was a very good celebration.

Happy Birthday my little Eanna!

Eanna turns 8 months old!

My sweetie turns 8 months old today, and I am very excited for tonight's celebration. We will have a very simple "party" and I'm preparing for the following:

a) Barbecue - I will try the recipe from Foodie Magazine and will see if it's a goodie or an ew-ie. Hahaha.
b) Pasta Alfredo - I will draw inspiration from Giada's version and see if my own will be a goodie.
c) Banana Split - I'm craving for this, so it will be served. Hehehehe
d) 8 pieces of munchkins - to serve as Eanna's "cake" hehehehe
e) Party decor - oh I really hope I'd have time to do this. If not then maybe next time.

I'm planning to have the celebration in our clubhouse, by the pool. No swimming for my little angel though. May me, but we'll see. The pool area gets to be C-O-L-D at night.

Blog about it later! :P

Reminiscing the India Experience

categories:
My first (and hopefully not the last) taste of India was when the President of my previous company asked me to be part of his team in coming up with a ship management book. I was really happy back then because I am going to a new country. Nevertheless, I was a bit nervous because I know the English is not really widely spoken, thus the need for someone to do Hindu translation.

Alas, when I went there, there was really no need for me to do some India translation since my Indian colleagues said that we are in the business capital of India, thus most, if not all, could speak English. Well, good for me right? So for a a week, we worked like crazy from morning till afternoon, then after office meant shopping time. I totally loved the trinkets sold there. I was even able to buy, oh my goodness, I forgot what it is called. The Indian sari if I am not mistaken? Plus I was able to buy the Indian shoes too (as usual, I forgot the name but back then these kinds of shoes were so in-fashion.

It's too bad though that my stay there was mostly for business, but I really would love to explore more of India and other bordering countries. Then again, the chances of me needing translators such as some who will do Arabic translation will even be greater. That or I should learn the language myself in order to help me in my future travels in this part of the world.

Who does the dishes? When we didn't have our housemate, I do the dishes, he cleans the pans, the stove, the oven. When I got pregnant though, he did the dishes too.

Who sleeps on the right side of the bed? Me. But when he wakes up to attend to Eanna, I transfer to the left side. Then early in the morning he goes back to the left side. Hehehe.

Birthday Lunch

categories:
My birthday last Saturday was really a fun and meaningful day for me, and in fact for me it was the best birthday I had so far. Thanks to all the people who gave their love and greeted me!

Anyway, I celebrated my 30th birthday in a very simple way (click here for my story hehehe), and I would like to share the very simple recipe of what I had for lunch:

Grilled Kobe (or Wagyu) Beef with Egg Noodles
1/4 - 1/2 kilo Kobe beef, Yakiniku cut
1 tbsp mirin
2 tbsp Japanese soy sauce
1 tsp brown sugar
a sprinkling of sesame seeds

For the noodles:
Egg Noodles
A dash of sesame oil
1 tsp Japanese soy sauce
a sprinkling of chili flakes

Heat the grill. In a sauce pan, toast the sesame seeds (around 5 seconds?) then add the mirin, soy sauce, and sugar. Bring to a boil then turn off the heat. Grill the meat, around 30 seconds on each side (they cook really fast). If you want, baste the meat with the dipping sauce.

For the noodles, boil water in a deep pan, then add the noodles. When al dente, take out the noodles and put them in cold water (optional). Toss the noodles with the sesame oil, soy sauce, and chili flakes.

I had kimchi on hand so I served that too. Too bad I didn't have sake, else it would have been a really good treat. Sushi that I bought in Salcedo Market was also served (though not the in picture!).

Oh my goodness, the beef was spectacular. Though expensive, it was really worth the price. If you will get Kobe beef, look at the marbling of the meat. The more the marbling, the better the quality.

Things I bought in Salcedo Market: Herbs, Lavender pot, salmon fillet, cheese torte

Hope I don't develop a nasty habit of craving for this beef. Hehehehe. We'll see.

Labor Day

categories: , ,
As promised, here's a recap of what we did during Labor Day (not really Labor Day-related. Hahahaha!)

I went to the market first thing in the morning buy buy some produce needed to sustain us at least until this weekend. Last night, I thought of having a little crabfest, so that was my main concern. As I have blogged about earlier, I was appalled (arte!) by the prices of fish, pork, and vegetables. Oh well. Such is life.

Anyway, I was back in time for us to prepare our lunch... Salt and pepper crabs, with lato (seaweed) and chopped tomatoes, plus mangoes on the side. Yummy....

Here's my recipe:

SALT AND PEPPER CRABS
Ingredients:
2 Kilos crabs
Sprite
All Purpose Flour (1 cup)
Spanish Paprika (1/2 cup)
Salt (lots!)
Pepper (lots!)
Chili Flakes
Chopped Garlic
Cooking Oil (you need a lot for deep frying)

First, marinate the crabs in Sprite while bringing water in a deep pot to a boil. Then dunk in the crabs plus the sprite and cook till crabs turn red. Set aside to cool before chopping them

Tip: I saw this in Asian Food Channel... If you want to be more "humane," put the crabs into the freezer to put them to sleep before cooking them. Hehehehe.

Combine the flour, paprika, salt, pepperm and chili flakes. Cover the crabs with the mixture.

Heat the cooking oil, then add garlic till cooked. Take out the garlic. Deep fry the crabs.

Y-U-M-M-Y, promise! I ate probably a kilo, you know!

***

We rested for a while (Eanna slept) before heading down to the pool to take a short swim. Water was very cool and refreshing. I'm so happy Eanna's now used to swimming. Yipee!

We would've gone to Powerplant afterwards, but I suddenly had a cold and so we just stayed at home and rested.

Anyway, these were the highlights of our day together. More summer days like this but with Enrique, I hope!
