Amazing health tips from the Bible
MIND YOUR BODY By Willie T. Ong, MD Updated May 26, 2009 12:00 AM

Some people assume that science and religion are in conflict with each other. Medicine, they say, is based on fact while religion is based on faith. But after carefully reading the Bible, I am amazed at how much medical knowledge can be found in the Good Book.

Allow me to discuss three examples, written before Christ’s birth that may convince you of the practical wisdom of the Bible.

Vegetarian Is Healthier

The first health advice can be found in the book of Daniel. The prophet is famous for being thrown in the lion’s den and escaping unharmed. But little do readers know that Daniel conducted the first scientific study when he proved to the King that a vegetarian diet is healthier that a meaty diet. Daniel presents his research proposal to the king: “Please allow your servants a 10 days’ trial, during which we are given only vegetables to eat and water to drink. You can then compare our looks with those of the boys who eat the king’s food; go by what you see…”

When the 10 days were over, Daniel and company looked better and fatter than any of the boys who had eaten the meaty food (Daniel 1: 12-15). Thus, Daniel convinced the king to adopt a vegetarian diet.

A study in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that people who consume more vegetables are healthier and have lower blood pressures compared to predominantly carnivorous people. It’s funny how researchers had to spend a lot of time, money, and energy to arrive at Daniel’s same conclusion 2,560 years ago.

Avoid Fat and Pork

The second Bible advice is to avoid fat and pork. With no knowledge of how cholesterol clogs our arteries, Moses emphatically states: “Do not eat any of the fat of cattle, sheep or goat … You must not eat (pork) or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you (Leviticus 7:23, 11: 8).”

For doctors, it was only in the 1950s when the ravages of cholesterol came to light. If you browse medical journals, the latest warning is remarkably familiar: Avoid fatty foods, especially pork and beef fat (bad cholesterol).

Be Clean and Avoid Infections

If the first two examples can be attributed to a prophet’s luck, then the third advice is simply incredible. Is it possible that Moses already knew about disease-causing bacteria two millenniums before any human eye saw them with a microscope? This appears to be the case when Moses warned that anyone with a skin sore should be isolated for seven days. The sick person is to burn his clothes and clean himself thoroughly. Moses gives a lengthy discussion (like a dermatologist) on what type of rash is clean or unclean. Then the high priest, acting like a doctor, will see the isolated patient every week until the sore disappears (See Leviticus 13).

What makes Moses’ pronouncements so astonishing is the fact that it was only in the 1880s, when scientists began to accept the germ theory, that bacteria caused disease. Before this time, doctors could not explain the numerous infections and deaths they encountered after operating with their bare hands. How could Moses have known that invisible particles caused disease and that burning and isolation prevented its spread? Unless, of course, he had some heavenly inspiration.

These are just three of numerous health tips I will leave for you to discover in your readings. Here are a few more to get you started:

1) A little wine is beneficial but not too much (1 Timothy 5:23, Psalm 23:20-21).

2) Don’t put infection-prone tattoo marks on your bodies (Leviticus 19:28).

3) Reduce stress by not worrying (Matthew 6:25-34) and resting on the Sabbath day (Leviticus 23:3).

Trust God with Your Life

Finally, there is one advice, unheeded yet by science that is the essence of the Bible — the power of faith and prayer. God asks us to trust Him completely, and He will take care of all our needs including our health, finances, and career. Could this be the secret to a long and fruitful life?

In a classic case, the elderly King Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. Despite his frail health, Hezekiah prayed earnestly and God granted him a life extension, saying: “I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will add 15 years to your life (Isaiah 38: 5).” And just like that, the king lived 15 more years.

Trust Your Doctors, Too

But lest we be misunderstood, patients must also seek the benefits of modern science and follow their doctor’s advice. Doctors are an extension of God’s healing hand, as the Lord Himself tells us to seek a good doctor and to trust him: “Honor physicians for their services, for the Lord created them; and their gift of healing comes from the Most High (Sirach 38: 1-2).”

As you can see, religion and science are not really at odds with each other. It is just that God’s thoughts are higher than our thoughts. Let those who have eyes, see. Over 2,000 years ago, God already gave us the blueprint for a healthy life, written in the holy pages of the Bible.

I can probably add more veggies in my diet... but to avoid fat (pork or beef).... How about my 12 steaks left? Hahahahah.

Travel and Leisure Magazine

This is my first time to buy a travel-related magazine, and I'm so glad that I did. What caught my eye initially was the main feture "Europe for Less." I have always dreamed of taking a vacation and visit European countries (even back to Norway!), but due to my hectic work schedule, I don't have the time right now to do so. Maybe I will only be able to take this leisure trip when I quit working and all. I hope it's worth the wait. And I hope I won't wait that long.

An added bonus that all the more convinced me to purchase this magazine was its feature on Manila. Of course, love your own noh! I wanted to read what others write about our very own, and i'm glad and happy about what's written. Realistic but still full of hope that we will someday again be one of the world's favorite places to go to.

Now I'm tempted to subscribe to the mag. We'll see. But right now, I'm oh so enjoying flipping the pages. It's really a good read!

Modern Swedish Design

Lately I have been soooo into the whole modern Swedish / Scandinavian design. I thought it was some passing phase just like my "love" for Neo-baroque last year and the turquoise craze (I'm still feeling it!) that started early this year. But its been weeks already and i'm still sooo in love with the design principles.

Anyway, I have stumbled across this Swedish website and here are the ideas I grabbed for our condo.

There's still so much wonderful ideas that can be found in the website (I saved the images hehehe) and I love all the looks so far.

Since our place is geared towards Modern Domino-ish style, I think we can pull off the Modern Swedish design. They're quite close though the latter is more simple (but ah-lav-et toooo much!!!).

Feeling Guilty

categories: ,
Lately, my strategy in order to be "not sad" about the whole husband-is-away thing is by keeping myself busy, distracted by things (e.g. surf the net for home designs, fashion, etc...), and by not thinking about him (whenever I do, I get sad and get teary-eyed... not good). For the past years kasi, I mope at night and all which I know for sure makes the situation worse.

But when I realize that I haven't thought of him throughout the day, I feel so guilty naman. It's as if I'm taking him out of my life and moving along "without him". Ngik.

Maybe if I overdo this "don't think about him" strategy, is it possible that this may cause me to "un-love" him? I hope not naman noh.

*Sigh*

Angels and Demons the Movie

I watched Angels and Demons last Friday, togetehr with my sibs K and R, plus my friend C. Initially I was scared that it might not be translated well in the movie, but it turned out to be a good one, far better that the Da Vinci Code (for me at least).

Honestly, I forgot the story since I read the book a long time ago, but as the movie progressed, I remembered the plot little by little. I knew who the culprit was but at one point I doubted if I remembered right. And I did, hahahaha.

Anyway, i would recommend people to watch this film. Lots of suspense, action-packed, plot is fast. Love it.

Wedding Ideas

Just saw this in one of my favorite design blogs...

Vintage and Form

I have just made a bag purchase (first for the year) and it was quite "special" to me because it's something that i'm quite new to... its form at least.

Ever since, I've been a lover of slouchy and hobo bags schlepping bag is what Daphne Oseana-Paez calls it. Save for my Goyard Croissiere (a bag which has a little bit of form), I haven't really had a bag that is very "structured."

Does that mean that my tastes are becoming "more mature"??? Hahahaha. Maybe it's just about time that I have a structured bag that I can use for more formal occassions (dates, cocktails, parties).

So anyway, here's my latest goodie... a Chanel vintage bag (not the one of Victoria's)...

I wanted to get the 2.55 bag (the one held by Victoria B.) and though there was one available, I felt that the one I got suited my built more. And yeps, the one I got serves the purpose of it being transformed into a clutch bag.

So does that mean that my quest to get the Balenciaga Giant city bag will be on hold? Ahm, not really sure. Because I really really want that one...

I think Eanna is too young to be fascinated with bags. But look at her, whether we go to the mall

Well, at least that's another reason for me to "invest" in good bags. Hehehehehe.

Eanna: Young Virgo

Got this from Jen's blog...

Young Virgo

The little Virgo is gentle, caring, diligent, rule abiding for the most part, and often shy, especially with strangers. As an infant, this baby may have issues with the digestive tract (the part of the body associated with Virgo). The baby's metabolism may announce itself by functioning very well, or by needing some help getting rid of gas after a feeding. Either way, digestion is a physical function to nurture in your infant.

As little Virgos are alert, love to learn, and are excellent mimics, they learn all about their surroundings in a very short time, often just by imitating adults. Quite often they are early talkers and readers. They want to know all the facts, get frustrated when they forget something they have learned. Virgos need a lot of encouragement, compliments, and affection to strengthen their self-confidence. They definitely don't like to be teased. Virgos can be fussy about food and may need to be educated about a healthy balance in their diet.

An interest in keeping pets happy stems from Virgo's interest in healing. Born under an earth sign, Virgo children tend to be aware of life and death at an early age. When your child expresses an interest in these issues (asking about a dead animal on the highway) they are expressing their internal sensitivity. Learning to express these sensitivities and receiving validation is important for the caring, gentle Virgo soul.

"Service-oriented," or pleasing others are traits easily detected already in the little Virgo. They may enjoy work for the sake of it, like helping at home, and working "for" other children may be considered fun. Of course this may concern you as a parent. With a watchful eye, help them express their industrious nature and, without overlooking the joy they get from cooperation and teamwork, encourage them to use their imagination to play make-believe or daydream, thus creating an intensely memorable childhood.

Get your child's astro profile here.

Love of My Life

Finally! The song I totally forgot and have been dying to remember was aired again over the radio. I googled the lyrics and... Ngik, Jim Brickman nga pala. I love love this song, my song for hubby...

Love of My Life

By: Jim Brickman w/ Michael W. Smith

I am amazed
When i look at you
I see you smiling back at me
It's like all my dreams come true

I am afraid
If i lost you girl
I'd fall through the cracks
And lose me track in this crazy lonely world

Sometimes it's so hard to believe
When the nights can be so long
And gave me the strength
And kept me holding on

Chorus
You are the love of my life
And I'm so glad you found me
You are the love of my life
Baby put your arms around me
I guess this is how it feels
When you finally find something real
My angel in the night
You are my love
The love of my life

Now here you are
With midnight closing in
You take my hand as our shadows dance
With moonlite on you skin

I look in your eyes
I'm lost inside your kiss
I think if i'd never met you
About all the things i'd missed

sometimes it's so hard to believe
when a love can be so strong
and faith gave me the strength
and kept me holding on

You are the love of my life
And I'm so glad you found me
You are the love of my life
Baby put your arms around me
I guess this is how it feels
When you finally find something real
My angel in the night
You are my love
The love of my life

And this is hubby's song for me...

Beautiful in My Eyes

By: Joshua Kadison

You're my peace of mind in this crazy world.
You're everything I've tried to find, your love is a pearl.
You're my Mona Lisa, you're my rainbow skies,
and my only prayer is that you realize
you'll always be beautiful in my eyes.

The world will turn and the seasons will change,
and all the lessons we will learn will be beautiful and strange.
We'll have our fill of tears, our share of sighs.
My only prayer is that you realize
you'll always be beautiful in my eyes.

You will always be beautiful in my eyes.
And the passing years will show
that you will always grow ever more beautiful in my eyes.

When there are lines upon my face from a lifetime of smiles,
and when the time comes to embrace for one long last while,
we can laugh about how time really flies.
We won't say goodbye 'cause true love never dies.
You'll always be beautiful in my eyes.

You will always be beautiful in my eyes.
And the passing years will show
that you will always grow ever more beautiful in my eyes.
The passing years will show that you will always grow
ever more beautiful in my eyes.

*Sigh*
So in love again. Hehehehe. Miss you my husband...

My Mobile Phone History

Got this nice post from Lil's Mutliply site, and it made me want to post my own list of mobile phones:

Bosch 607 (1998): My First Phone
Dad got me this on my 4th year in College. Exciting na ang buhay! :P

Panasonic GD30 (1999): The "US and Canada Phone"
Got this after graduation, before I went to the US and Canada for a vacation before plunging into the corporate world. Called the Canada phone ebcause I brought this with me, not because there was international coverage, but because I wanted to read all those "memorable nothings" na texts whiel I'm away. Hahahaha. It was short-lived though, because I replaced my phone with a newer one after just a few months...

Nokia 3210 (1999): My First "WOW Phone"
Do you remember how this phone rocked the mobile phone community, because of its sleek design and the more famous... NO ANTENNA phone. Naks. Got this on my third paycheck, don't remember na. Hahahah. What's more memorable was that is couted for the copper version in Greenhills, and got this even if the "patong" was too much. Hahaha.

Nokia 8890 (2001): My First "Sosyal" Phone
Yes... feeling accomplished na ako hahahah. Love love love this phone. Lots of memorable times. Remember AA, RV, and of course, EP? Ngyak, let's not go into that. Hahahaha. Something to remember too, hubby and I had the same phone hehehehehe.

Sony Ericsson P910i (2005): My First "Touch Screen" Phone
I love love love this phone to the max. Lots of games, lots of phone memory, lots of everything! It took a lot of pain from my end to get this... for FREE! My phone bills went that high (thanks to my hubby and our international calls, whew) that I was entitled to get the high-end phone at that time. Love, love love it.

Motorola Razr v3i (2006): My Stylish Phone
Who couldn't resist the charm and beauty of this stylish phone in Black? Got this as my business phone when I transferred to my current company. I lvoe this phone to the max. Hahaha. However, this poor little thign found its way in the toilet bowl when my nephew was playing with it, went to the bathroom, slipped, and down the phone went. Dear sis tried to fix it by blow-drying the phone harharhar. It got 'revived," but just like a sick person, its health went downwards. memorable for me becuase this was the phone that got the fist photos of my little darling baby...

Nokia N82 (2008): My Current Phone
Again, free from Globe due to my high phone usage.I love love love this phone!!!! This made me stop bringing my digital camera. I lvoe it. Very easy to use. I love it. love it. Love it. Love it. 'nuf said.

Next phone perhaps? Not yet thinking about it, but maybe next year.

What's your mobile phone history?

You've got style, no doubt about it. You always look your best.

You are on top of trends, and you carefully pick what works for you.

You dress for the occasion, and you never wear anything inappropriate.

You only own the best clothing and accessories. You know how to make an impression.

Dream dream dream

Goodness, last night I dreamt of my big crush, Mr. JLC and I when I woke up, I was like "shucks, that was just a dream lang pala." I know hubby would kick me if he learned about this. Or maybe not. Because he's used to me gushing over Mr. Rovic. And he finds it unfair because if he just remarks "Sexy ni {whoever} ..." I give him a really nasty glance. Hahahaha. If I see cardboard displays of JLC in malls, I stop and think... "hmm should I get this?" (harharhar just kidding).

And it is good to know that i'm not the only misis gushing over him. I have company! Hahahaha. later I hope I dream of him again. Well, maybe I should dream of my husband instead. Noh?

Maybe I Should Stop Surfing the Net

categories:
Maybe I should stop surfing the Net. Because the Net provides some information, which for me, can be regarded as temptations. I'm trying to be a frugal person in times of crisis, but everytime I click click click, I see something that fancies me. Then I think about them until I get convinced that I should have them.

Gash, I'm kinda torn you know. A part of me really wants to be an even better smart-spender. Yet a part of me shouts "go go go!" At least for the travel part, that's quite easy... while E is away, travelling is put on hold. But for the little luxuries in life... ok for bags, I don't buy them here so unless somebody goes out of the country, then the temptation is far greater.

Shets. Am I the only one who has this problem???

And to think that I am a "Green or Red" girl. I'm not complaining though, for I think the color is really pretty.

I even want to change Eanna's walls to have that color. With white, and red as accent. Hmmm. Something like this from Simplygrove's website, but more girly-ish.

Oh well, tastes change, right?

Animal-Lover

Eanna just loves animals, particularly dogs, cats, fishes, and horses. It's so funny that I terach her the right names of the animals, and yet she only answers back with the sounds these animals make. Example, if I ask her what an animal is 9e.g. pointing to a dog), she'd say "wof, wof." Ask her what a chicken is and she'd say "cak cak." She's just too cute whenever she mimics animal sounds. Blame it on the Old MacDonald song I guess. Hehehe. She's just too fascinated with them, except one time when we were in Tagaytay, hubby thought that since Eanna kept on pointing at the horses, she'd want to ride on them. That didn't happen. Eanna refused to. Hahaha. At least I wouldn't have any concerns about getting her equestrian apparel.

Anyway, at least she can associate the sounds with the right animals. But of course, my main goal is for her to actually say the names/kinds of animals. Di ba?

Bank Loan Approved

Yay! My agent has informed me that our transfer to bank financing is already under processing, and that it is also confirmed that the checks we gave for the in-house monthly amortization has alreayd been put on hold. This means that by next month, we would be paying amortization to the bank... with lower interest rates! Thank goodness our credit reputation is in good shape, and there's no need for us to get credit report services to help us out. It pays to have good credit, you know. Anyway, tThis finally gave us peace of mind after weeks of anxiety over this tedious process.

BDO (Banco de Oro) has also given us a good package wherein even the transfer fees are to be part of our loan, so we need not shell out a huge amount prior to transferring the loan. I think it's only BDO who offers this, so for those in need of bank loans, I recommend BDO.

I don't know, I'm just curious about Mikaela... I've just heard about her (and saw her billboards) a few weeks back and now since I am determined to "maintain" myself better, I'm considering having an appopintment with ehr clinic. Nope, it's not about liposuctions or any surgical procedures, but more on... yun, maintenance of skin and all. I asked my sister if she would be interested to join me, and she's still thinking about it. She however told me that I should focus on losing weight (kainis), and told me about liporexall reviews online.

gash, my family can't get over the fact that I will no longer go abck to my old weight/physique. Hahaha. But anyway, I would definitely inquire about the services of Mikaela. Hopefully I'd be convinced to try.

Murphy-ied

Anything that can possibly go wrong, does.

And I thought being hopeful will save the day (see previous entry)...

Last night, the two helpers that I hired yesterday morning told me that they will go home to get their things and be back first thing in the morning. I asked them if they were sure of staying with us, and both said they are absolutely sure.

This morning came and went, but no sign of the two. No-SHOW!!!! i was really confused because I thought everything's ok already. They asked if I can increase their salary, and I agreed, I just have to tell ym hubby about it. I called up my BIL, and he said that the sister of the other helper, who he's hiring, also didn't show up.

Seriously, last night, I thought of it, what if the two didn't show up. I didn't know Murphy's law would knock at my door. Ngik.

So I was late again for work. I had to wait for my nephew-in-law to go to our place, so that he can hold Eanna while I drive going to my in-laws' place.

There were good things though:
1. My Grandma told me that she still has three candidates for me. However, they are only available to start on the 12th.
2. my Aunt has 2 candidates as well. Both live in the city so that's a little concern though.
3. Daughter of Eanna's ex-Yaya told us that Yaya N will come back to us this Sunday. I'm still a bit skpetical but hubby and I have given her the benefit of the doubt and we are willing to take her in again (but talk to her first of what happened with the hopes that it will not repeated).

Oh well, I'm still hoping things will turn out right.

Happy weekend all!

Being Hopeful

I am glad that my brother-in-law was able to look for 2 helpers for us. I interviewed them and both seemed to be ok. The only caveat is that they live nearby (Mandaluyong too), and hubby and I have this thing about helpers having their permanent residences here in the Mtero.

Eanna seemed to warm up on them quite well. She as well as the two are currently in my parents' place, being "scrutinized' by Manang Emy, who is our longtime helper. She has given good feedback so far.

Anyway, both are on trial period and hopefully they will turn out to be ok. I talked to my Grandma and asked her to put on hold the 2 helpers supposedly for us, coming here in Manila next week. If the two right now don't "match" our "expectations," at least we have some sort of back-up.

Working Again

After 3 days of playing certified housewife, I am back to work. My brother picked up Eanna so she could stay at our parents place today. Though there was a sigh of relief, I couldn't help but be sad because dear daughter will be away from me today. I could still recall how hard she cried and reached out for me as she went inside the car. I feared that she will keep on crying the whole day.

But apprarently, not so. I called after 10 minutes and dear daughter was happily playing with her cousin and Manag's daughter! I called lunch time and they said that she ate a lof during lunch. Called again this afternoon and she was sleeping. called again after two hours and now she's playing again.

It felt "normal" again being here in the office, but I still feel my body ache and I know that I'm still very tired. I have never experienced this much "house chores" in my entire life. Hahaha. Guess that's part of the package, of having your own family to take care of. I don't know though if it's gonna sink in on me, you know that fact. Hahahaha.

Anyway, it's gonna be the same arrangement again tomorrow and on Friday, and on weekdays up until we get new helpers. I better get a car seat for Eanna though. And I do hope she'd adapt easily in using it. Cross fingers.
